The Band Perry broke into the world of Country Radio on this date in 2010, Toby Keith took us all to Honkytonk University in 2005, Johnny Cash started four days of recording in Rick Rubin’s living room in 1993 and more.

Here’s the list for Today In Country Music History for 17 May, 2012.

  • The Band Perry‘s “If I Die Young” was released to radio in 2010.
  • Barbara Mandrell, Roy Clark and session musician Charlie McCoy were officially inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville in 2009.
  • Toby Keith‘s Honkytonk University album was released in 2005.
  • A new $37-million Country Music Hall of Fame opened in downtown Nashville in 2001.
  • Johnny Cash began four days of recording in producer Rick Rubin‘s living room in Los Angeles, backed only by his own guitar in 1993. It marked the beginning of work on his American Recordings album.
  • Bill Monroe was a guest at the White House, along with Frank Sinatra, in 1983.
  • Merle Haggard & George Jones recorded the chart-topping single “Yesterday’s Wine” in 1982.
  • Eddie Rabbitt‘s “Gone Too Far” went to Number One on the Billboard country chart in 1980.
  • Merle Haggard & Clint Eastwood‘s Number One single “Bar Room Buddies” charted in 1980.
  • Pop singer B.J. Thomas claimed the top of the Billboard country chart in 1975 with “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song.”
  • Glen Campbell recorded “Gentle On My Mind” at the Capitol Recording Studio in Hollywood in 1967.
