Rhett Akins is about to be a grandfather twice over, and he couldn't be more excited. The songwriter sat down with Taste of Country Nights and shared his enthusiasm for his son, Thomas Rhett, and daughter-in-law, Lauren, on not only expecting their first child, but adopting as well.

Akins says he knew about the adoption process, but when Rhett came home from Africa with a Christmas present for his dad, he wasn’t prepared for what he opened.

“It was a picture of the kid they’re working on adopting,” he explains — but he didn’t quite get what the big deal was at first. “So I was like, ‘Aw that’s cool, that’s a cool pic.' And they go, 'No, look at the picture!' And I go, 'Yeah, I see it! — What is it?' And they go, 'Look at the shirt!’”

The shirt was a Big Brother/Big Sister shirt, revealing that in addition to the adopted child, the couple is having one biologically. For privacy reasons the singer is not able to reveal the adopted child's sex, but Rhett and his wife did share that the biological baby is a girl, thus creating a name dilemma.

“My family's all boys," Akins says. "In our family everybody’s first name is either Thomas, John or James. And if you go all the way back to like 1801, every single Akins in line is a John, Thomas or James."

Overall, Akins is just proud of his son and daughter-in-law, noting that they are the real deal in every aspect of their lives.
