We've heard a lot in the last few years about the Cern Large Hadron Collider. It runs a circle 17 miles in diamater under Switzerland and France and has allowed us to explore physics like never before. It even lead to the discovery of the Higgs-Boson or God Particle.

Did you know that if not for congressional government bureaucracy, these discoveries could have taken place many years earlier and in Texas? It all could have been done right below Waxahachie, TX in the Superconducting Super Collider.

In 1991, construction began on a super collider that was definitely Texas sized. While the current LHC is 17 miles long, this one was going to be over 50 miles. This would have made it almost 3 times as powerful. Unfortunately, part way through it's creation, congress pulled funding for the project. They decided that it was more beneficial to put their science funding into the International Space Station.

Now, the remnants of the 14 miles built for the collider have been flooded with water to preserve it. It is sometimes referred to as 'Desertron' by people who know about it. Check out the above video from Atlas Obscura to get some more details about the Texas Superconducting Super Collider and think about all the science that could have been accomplished.
