The valedictorian for the 2016 class at David Crockett High School in Austin caused some waves after tweeting her undocumented status prior to graduation.

Senior class president and valedictorian Mayte Lara Ibarra tweeted her accomplishments such as GPA and her full tuition to UT, closing it out by admitting to her undocumented status,

During the graduation ceremony on June 3, Ibarra made no mention of her undocumented status. Her tweet was retweeted over 9,000 times and received almost 20,000 likes, but also received a great amount of hateful comments, including threats of deportation, resulting in Ibarra deleting her Twitter account after posting,

I want all this attention from strangers to stop already.

A spokesman from the University of Texas could not comment on Ibarra's status with the university, but noted that UT and other Texas universities grant two-semester tuition wavers to Texas high school valedictorians, regardless of their residency status,

State law also does not distinguish between documented and undocumented graduates of Texas high schools in admissions and financial aid decisions. University policies reflect that law.
