We’ve all been ripped off by a vending machine at some point. You scrape around your pockets to find enough change for that delicious, refreshing beverage, drop your coins in the slot, then wait for the item to drop, but it never comes. You might bang on the machine or shake it, but to no avail. You’ve been ripped off. A teen in California tried to do the opposite and rip off a soda vending machine, but in his case, he got stuck.

Oops.

The 17-year-old, who hasn’t been identified, stuck his hand into the machine in an attempt to free a soda near a trolley station, and that’s when things went south. His hand became lodged and it wasn’t until a rider of a trolley saw him that help was called.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics all arrived to try to help the teen, but nothing was successful. They finally used a rotary saw to open the door and that’s when he was freed with only some scrapes and soreness. He never got his drink.

Of course, that doesn’t mean he was free to go home. Police took him into custody and he’ll likely be charged with petty theft. He’ll also have a story to tell his friends, and they’ll be sure to make fun of him for a long time to come over this incident.

I’ve never tried to reach my hand into a vending machine, but maybe that’s because I don’t want to be a statistic.

What do you do when the vending machine doesn’t give you the item you’re trying to purchase? Do you leave a note to be reimbursed later, beat the machine, or just chalk it up to a loss?
