Darius Rucker got a gold record for not thinking about not thinking on this date in 2009, George Strait earned his second double-platinum album for a movie soundtrack in 1993 and Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash in 1959. The event was later memorialized by Don McClean in the song American Pie, the name of the aircraft.
