It was on this date in 2009 that Steel Magnolia debuted at the Grand Ole Opry, Tim McGraw got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006 and Austin City Limits recorded their very first show in 1975. Who do you think the performer was?

Here’s the list for Today In Country Music History for 17 October, 2011.

  • Steel Magnolia made their Grand Ole Opry debut in 2009.
  • Vince Gill‘s These Days boxed set, featuring four discs of new material, was released in 2006. Guests included Sheryl Crow, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, Gretchen Wilson, LeAnn Rimes, John Anderson, Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark and Amy Grant.
  • Tim McGraw received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.
  • SHeDAISY‘s Kelsi Osborn married Steve Simpson in 1997.
  • Billy Ray Cyrus performed the national anthem at the World Series as the Braves beat the Blue Jays 3-1 in 1992.
  • Naomi Judd announced her retirement from the Judds in 1990.
  • The Kentucky HeadHuntersPickin’ On Nashville album was released in 1989.
  • The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band topped the Billboard chart with “Fishin’ In The Dark” in 1987.
  • Austin City Limits filmed its pilot episode starring 42-year-old Willie Nelson in 1974. It was broadcast in early 1975.

They’re not quite the most photogenic bunch in Country music, but I sure do like their sound! Here’s the Kentucky Headhunters’ take on an old Country standard.
