Yet another freak tragedy has hit our homeland. This time at the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis. Just before Sugarland was set to take stage on Sat. Aug 13, Mother Nature stepped in with a plan of her own. As I read more and more, it became evident on just how tragic this accident really was! Blame it on weather, lack of preparation, or whatever you would like, just keep all of the family’s of the injured and deceased in your thoughts and prayers. Just a horrible situation all around.

At around 8:45pm on Saturday, the fair officials notified the over 15,000 fans in attendance that severe weather was developing and to seek shelter near by. Not near enough time to flee, a strong gust of wind, with reported gusts of 60+mph, the wind toppled the outdoor venue over to the ground. Sara Bareilles had just finished with her opening act and the crowd was waiting for head-liners, Sugarland to take the stage. Fortunately, no performers or band staff was on stage during the collapse. One piece of good news to offset the 5 fatalities reported along with 45 more being severely injured. “Several of the survivors are being treated for serious injuries, and there’s still a possibility of additional fatalities” said Indiana State Police 1st Sgt. Dave Bursten.

Many of the preforming acts instantly tweeted on the accident, Sara B. tweeted “I’m speechless and feel so helpless. Please send love and prayers to Indianapolis tonight. My heart aches for the lives lost.” Sugarland vocalist Jennifer Nettles later issued a statement. ”We are stunned and heartbroken for the fans and their families in Indiana,” she said. “We hold those injured in our prayers at this very sad time. There are no words. It is tragic.”

As you can see the stage was a massive one so when it came time to help the wounded, it took all hands on deck. Big thanks to the Indianapolis FD/PD and all others  for all their efforts in rescuing these people. All law enforcement personnel and fans helped to remove the debris and assist their fellow Hoosiers. Hows that for entertainment? You go to a show expecting to enjoy yourself, and on the contrary, you end up losing a loved one or your life? I think this should be a eye-opener for the rigging crews and should also step up the specifications on how structurally sound an outdoor venue should be in cases such as this! Preparation is key. The fair resumed today with a service held in memory of the lost ones. Janet Jackson is set to continue the concert series on Wednesday, with Train and Maroon 5 preforming on Thursday, and wrapping up with Lady Antebellum and Brett Eldredge on Friday.
