When 80-year-old Laverne Everett decided to take to the skies for her birthday, she probably expected what anyone skydiving for their first time would. Excitement, nervousness, and maybe even second thoughts. When you watch the video, you can see that she’s probably having those second thoughts, and her hands do all the talking when she repeatedly grabs on to the airplane. The instructor with her frees her hands from the plane and they jump.

That’s when things went really wrong. The upper harness came off, leaving Everett’s legs harnessed and her partner holding on to her for dear life. Eventually the parachute deployed and they landed safely, but chances are that this particular granny won’t be trying her hand at skydiving again.

The company she used, Parachute Center, has had its share of incidents. Reports show that 8 people have died with that company in the past decade, and they’ve had to pay out quite a bit in fines and are facing civil suits.

I’ve never been skydiving myself, but the thought has always interested me. I think that if I were to actually shell out the cash to do it, however, I would probably get to the designated height and freak out. Videos like this would be going through my head.

Have you ever gone skydiving? Would you ever want to take a plunge like this? Are people just crazy if they choose to jump out of airplanes?
