4-year-old preschooler Natalee Pearson from Aurora Colorado came home from school on Friday confused and disappointed when she wasn't allowed to eat the Oreos her mother had packed in her lunchbox that day.

The uneaten Oreos were sent home with a note from the school stating that a "nutritious lunch" is mandatory for all students. The note from Children's Academy reads:

Dear Parents,

It is very important that all students have a nutritious lunch. this is a public school setting and all children are required to have a fruit, a vegetable, and a healthy snack from home, along with a milk. If they have potatoes, the child will also need bread to go along with it. Lunchables, chips, fruit snacks, and peanut butter are not considered to be a healthy snack. This is a very important part of our program and we need everyone's participation."

Natalee's mother, Leeza Pearson, was shocked and says she does not agree with the decision by the school and that they took things too far. Pearson says that her daughter is perfectly healthy and told TODAy.com that the school needs to "butt out."

"We noticed last minute that we ran out of fruit or we would have put that in there instead," Pearson said. "So we threw some Oreos in there." She says that Natalee's lunch also included a sandwich and string cheese.

Pearson says she's not the type of parent who sends junk food with her child every day and, for the most part, she does try to make sure her daughter has a healthy meal. "And this was Friday," said Pearson. "Why not give her a special treat?"

A representative from the school says they gave Natalee a healthy alternative to the cookies.

Children's Academy is a private school, but Pearson says Natalee attends as a public student under the state's preschool option program.
