A follow-up to the 1988 comedy hit ‘Beetlejuice’ has been rumored for years, but now star Michael Keaton has confirmed that he and director Tim Burton are in talks about returning for a sequel.

Two years ago, Tim Burton admitted that “Dark Shadows” and “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” writer Seth Grahame-Smith was given permission to work on a script, this is the first time we’ve heard that Michael Keaton would also be on board.  While on his press tour for his latest film ‘Robocop’, Michael Keaton admitted that not only are he and Tim Burton discussing doing another film, but that its very close to coming together,

I’ve emailed Tim a couple of times, talked to the writer a couple of times, but all really, really preliminary stuff until relatively recently.  I always said that [Beetlejuice] is the one thing I’d like to do again, if I ever did anything again. But it kind of required Tim to be involved some way or another. Now it looks like he is involved. And without giving too much away, we’ve talked to each other, and emailed each other, and if he’s in, it’s going to be hard not to be in.

Apart from Keaton and Burton returning to the project, Wynona Rider hinted that she’s been in talks to reprise her role as Lydia Deetz, a part very near and dear to the actress,

And I have to say, I love Lydia so much. She was such a huge part of me. I would be really interested in what she is doing 27 years later.

A script for a sequel titled ‘Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian’ was being passed around in the 90s, with Kevin Smith being one of the writers offered rewriting duties, but passing that honor up for a chance to write a new Superman film.  Since the original film, ‘Beetlejuice’ returned in a short lived animated series about Beetlejuice and Lydia being friends and having adventures in the land of the dead.
