LeAnn Rimes Accepts the Past in Emotional ‘Borrowed’ Video
For many months, LeAnn Rimes has endured public scrutiny over her private life — mostly due to having an affair with actor Eddie Cibrian, who is now her husband. Rimes has warned her fans that her upcoming album, ‘Spitfire,’ is an honest portrayal of her life experiences in recent years. That said, it’s no surprise that the music video for ‘Borrowed,’ the album’s first single, evokes some strong emotions.
The video starts out in a pretty traditional format: Rimes is in a recording studio, belting out the sad lyrics to the song. While backup vocalists and musicians look on, the country singer gets lost in the memories that inspired her to write the song.
The emotionally-charged ballad details Rimes’ emotions during her affair with Cibrian. When the country star met her current husband, they were both married to other people. While Rimes’ ex-husband has been relatively quiet about the affair, Cibrian’s ex, ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hillsâ star Brandi Glanville, has made very public comments about her distaste for Rimes.
When the ‘Blue’ hitamaker appeared on ‘The Tonight Show’ last month, she explained that affairs are never cut and dry — especially when they’re public.
âI actually carried that lyric, âI know youâre not mine, only borrowed,â around with me for about eight months,â Rimes admitted. âI was afraid that if I wrote it, I would have to write it so honestly that I would offend, more so than I already had, everyone. I knew also that thereâs a lot of humanity in the truth that this is how I felt, because a lot people, I think, wanted to put words in my mouth as to how I felt. This is the truth, this is how I felt, and thereâs no beauty in it.â
Although ‘Borrowed’ is a sad song — there’s no doubt about that — the video is actually somewhat moving. The residual pain from the affair is present on the 30-year-old singer’s face, and even the session musicians and vocalists who contribute to the song look rather somber. Hopefully Rimes can use the ‘Borrowed’ video as some kind of catharsis for her past mistakes and move on to a happier future.
