Kellie Pickler, ‘Little Bit Gypsy’ – Song Review

Kellie Pickler‘s new single ‘Little Bit Gypsy’ is a step back vocally, but not a step backward. There’s no flaws in her performance, but her power is stifled when compared to her previous single.

The track is a more mainstream approach than she’s taken since shifting styles on the ’100 Proof’ album. The uptempo, rambling-down-the-highway beat is driven by a sliding bass guitar and organ. It’s delightful, but a little gimmicky. This is not a vocal showcase — ‘Little Bit Gypsy’ is more about the song and a story that fits Pickler like her finest ‘Dancing With the Stars’ costume.

Boy there’s a few things you need to know about me / Before you let your sweet heart get in to deep / A white picket fence don’t feel like home / Don’t wanna rock I need a rolling stone,” she sings during the first verse.

This feels like the woman we’ve watched grow up since 2006, yet somehow she doesn’t take total command of the production. Vocally, she’s buried at times. Pickler doesn’t force you to pay attention like she’s done before.

I’m traveling circus train / Spinning weather vane / Blowing where the blows / I was born to chase the sun / Some horses gotta run / Yeah I’m always gonna be / A little bit gypsy,” she says during each memorable chorus.

The chorus provides an effective hook, and at a sequin past three minutes long, few will have time to feel anything less than neutral about ‘Little Bit Gypsy.’ It’s a good song, but not one that will make a shortlist of fan favorites.
