Joanna Mosca Takes Fans Behind the Scenes of ‘Have a Little Mercy’ — Exclusive Video

Joanna Mosca is releasing a new EP, and she’s giving readers of The Boot a glimpse into the sessions for the title song.

Mosca worked with hot Nashville producers New Voice Entertainment on the project. The production team features Rich Redmond, Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy — who play on Jason Aldean‘s records, as well as at his live shows — and David Fanning, who recently released a country version of Justin Timberlake‘s ‘Drink You Away.’ Together, they have produced hits for artists including Thompson Square and Parmalee.

It was a new way of cutting for Mosca, who enlisted country star Bryan White to produce her previous project, ‘Let It All Begin.’

“First I would do a few rough vocals so that they could hear what kind of vocal I was thinking about doing,” she tells The Boot. “Then they would go in singly to do their parts. I heard most of that, because the producers, three of them are also the musicians. I heard the guitar tracks being put down, and the bass and the drums. That was fun, seeing them work.”

Mosca says Fanning’s contribution is no less important.

“He really helps with all of the vocals,” she states. “Because he’s a vocalist, I think that’s the piece that was missing from their team.”

She admits she initially approached the sessions with a degree of trepidation.

“When I saw all four guys there, I thought, ‘Oh my God, are all four of you gonna be giving me orders?’” she recalls with a laugh. “At first it was intimidating working with four producers. But they each have their role. They get along fabulously.

“They only torment me in the best possible way,” she adds with another laugh.

The result is a collection of songs that’s different from Mosca’s past efforts.

“The last EP, a lot of the songs centered around encouragement — keep on going, don’t give up, and that type of message,” she reflects. “The instrumentation kinda matched that. These songs — or most of them — tend to be about strong women; just be good to yourself, don’t let men walk all over you, have some self-esteem and self-respect type of thing.”

That comes along with a more aggressive sound.

“A little bit more edgy,” she says. “A little bit more [of] the rock country licks from the guitar, and there’s a really strong bass line. Of course, we get a little softer — we have banjo and a few other instruments in on a slower number, ‘He Ain’t You.’ But in general, I think that’s what I’ve been hearing from people, and what we ended up with.”

Mosca feels the album’s title song and first single encapsulates the attitude and feel of the entire EP.

“I love the driving force of the instrumental track, and I really enjoyed the sense of humor of the song,” she says. “It’s a woman who I think is strong, because she’s got a sense of humor about love and what’s happening to her. She’s falling for this guy, but oh God, have a little mercy on me, please!”

Mosca balances her time on the road and in Nashville with family time with her husband and kids in Westchester, N.Y.

“It’s the touring that gets tricky,” she says. “The Nashville trips aren’t so bad. It’s the touring. But my kids are a little older now, and my husband is very understanding, so that helps.”

‘Have a Little Mercy’ is available via iTunes and Amazon. For more information on Mosca, visit her official website, or follow her on Twitter and Facebook.
