On January 1, 2016, Texas became the 45th to legally allow open carry of handguns. The new law didn't mean that just anyone could now strap up. You still have to get licensed or already have had your concealed carry license.

Here in Wichita Falls, we haven't really seen a sudden increase in people open carrying, but in case you wondered how many have the ability, we now have an answer.

A new interactive map shows you the breakdown by zip code of all the license holders in Texas. The information was obtained by MySA.com using public information and the Texas Open Records laws.

They found that the areas with the most license holders where the big metro areas like Houston, San Antonio, and the Metroplex. They also found that more than 40 zip codes have 2,500 or more license holders.

Of Wichita Falls' Zip Codes, two have over 1000 license holders. The breakdown of the Wichita Falls area by Zip Code is:

There are a total of 4,753 license to carry holders in Wichita Falls. There are a total of 937,419 license holders in the state as a whole. That's only about 3.6% of the entire state population that currently is legally able to carry a handgun, in a holster, in public. Currently, just about 1/2 of 1% of those licenses are in the Wichita Falls area.
