High school senior James Tate decided to go big when he asked friend Sonali Rodrigues to the prom last Friday.

So, in the middle of the night, he taped large cardboard letters spelling out "Sonali Rodrigues, Will you go to prom with me? HMU - Tate" on an exterior wall of Shelton High School in Connecticut. (HMU stand for "Hit Me Up.")

His grand gesture impressed Rodrigues - she said yes - but not so much the school's administration, who suspended Tate and banned him from the prom. They claim putting up the letters was risky, and that Tate had trespassed onto school property after hours.

This story has quickly garnered national attention, with a Facebook page called "Let James Tate Go to the Prom" collecting 130,000 fans and counting.

In fact, specifically in response to Tate's situation, two Connecticut state representatives have just proposed legislation that would forbid schools from banning students from school events without giving them an option of an alternative punishment.

As of now, Tate remains banned from attending the June 4 dance. Read on to learn more about this story.
