The ball game couldn’t start until Carrie Underwood finished singing in 2006, George Straight hung his hat in Tennessee (for good reasons!) in 1987 and Kenny Rogers left one band to form another in 1967.

Here’s the rundown for Today In Country Music History for 11 July, 2011.

  • Carrie Underwood performed the national anthem prior to Major League Baseball’s all-star game at Pittsburgh’s PNC Park in 2006.
  • “All My Ex’s Live In Texas” took George Strait to Number One on the Billboard country chart in 1987.
  • Earl Thomas Conley‘s “Fire And Smoke” went to Number One in 1981.
  • Kenny Rogers quit The New Christy Minstrels to form The First Edition in 1967.
  • Buck Owens recorded the Number One single “Love’s Gonna Live Here” in 1963.
  • Hank Williams recorded the chart-topping single “Jambalaya” in 1952.

Remember what Kenny Rogers looked like in the early ’70s? Long hair and big glasses!
