Carrie Underwood Meets Your Mother, Merle Haggard Begs Your Pardon – Today In Country Music History

Carrie Underwood met your mother … sort of … on this date in 2010, Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffet turned time into gold in 2005 and Merle Haggard was issued a full pardon by a California Governor who would one day become President way back in 1972.

  • Carrie Underwood had a guest role on the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother in 2010.
  • Clint Black was a contestant on The Celebrity Apprentice on NBC in 2009. Other participants included Scott Hamilton, Brian McKnight, Dennis Rodman and Joan and Melissa Rivers.
  • “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” Alan Jackson‘s collaboration with Jimmy Buffett, was certified gold in 2005.
  • Waylon Jennings reached the top of the Billboard country chart with the Rodney Crowell-penned “I Ain’t Living Long Like This” in 1980.
  • Merle Haggard was granted a full pardon by California Governor Ronald Reagan in 1972.
  • Barbara Mandrell signed her first major label contract with Columbia in 1969.
  • Johnny Cash married June Carter in Franklin, Kentucky, in 1968.
  • Buck Owens signed with Capitol Records in 1957.
  • The Everly Brothers recorded “Bye Bye Love” and “I Wonder If I Care As Much” at the Methodist Television, Radio and Film Commission in Nashville in 1957.
  • Hank Williams recorded “Mind Your Own Business,” “Honky Tonk Blues,” “You’re Gonna Change (Or I’m Gonna Leave)” and “Lost Highway” at the Castle Recording Studio in Nashville in 1949.
