Blake Shelton's "Savior's Shadow" is a gospel song that finds a centered country singer giving glory to God. The new song from If I'm Honest is the one songwriter Jessi Alexander talked about a month ago, revealing that it was Shelton's idea.

Shelton tweeted about the song when he, Alexander and Jon Randall wrote it back in August 2015. He teased an "important song," but it wasn't clear it'd made the album until Alexander and Randall talked to Taste of Country in March.

“He started an incredible song, a gospel song, and asked me and JR to help him finish," Alexander says. “It’s beautiful and moving and I can’t wait for him to tell the story. It’s almost his ‘Why Me Lord’ — it’s very deep to him and to us." "Why Me Lord" is a well-known Kris Kristofferson song that seemingly came out of nowhere when released.

“It came deep from Blake’s soul and we were just glad we got to kind of help him birth it.”

The new song is just the second the 2016 Country Jam headliner has revealed from his upcoming studio album. It lives up to Shelton's promise that this album will be extremely personal. One gets a sense that the writing of this song was emotional, coming just one month after his divorce from Miranda Lambert.

On Twitter, Shelton revealed that his co-writers sing with him on the song and shares what inspired it. "I dreamed the song last summer," he wrote on Friday. "I woke up and wrote down everything I could remember."

"I'm literally overwhelmed," he added after overwhelming positive response. "Thank y'all so much. I'm so proud of this song."
