Alan Jackson didn’t take to the road on this date in 2004, he BECAME the road, Ricky Skaggs was singin the “Highway Blues” in 1983 and Johnny Cash signed a Twenty-Eight year contract in 1958.

Here’s the rundown for Today In Country Music History for 09 July, 2011.

  • A portion of Interstate 85 near Newnan, Georgia was dedicated as the Alan Jackson Highway in 2004.
  • Roy Acuff was one of 12 recipients of the National Medal of Arts at a White House ceremony hosted by President George Bush in 1991.
  • Ricky Skaggs rode to Number One in Billboard with “Highway 40 Blues” in 1983.
  • Merle Haggard recorded the Top 10 single “I Can’t Be Myself” in 1970.
  • Johnny Cash signed with Columbia Records, his label for the next twenty-eight years, in 1958.
  • Carl Smith and June Carter married in Maryville, Tennessee in 1952.

This sounds like a great time for an OLD Ricky Skaggs video, here he is from 1985.
