25th Anniversary of the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster [PHOTOS]

It’s hard for me to believe, but today is the 25th anniversary of the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. Back in 1986 the only ways we had to learn about events around the world were printed newspapers and magazines, radio news and televised news. Today we can watch it play out almost in real time on our digital devices. We’ve learned a lot about nuclear energy since then, both the dangers and the benefits.

On March 11th the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan and the story repeated itself at the Fukushima plant and once again the world was glued to their TV, radio, laptop, or smartphone, hoping as much as we could that this sort of disaster could be avoided.

While the amount of radiation leaking into the atmosphere in Japan is considerably less than the event at Chernobyl, they’ve still got a very difficult road ahead of them.

As we remember the events from 25 years ago, and look at the long term effects of the surrounding area, Flickr has posted a gallery of photographs documenting the Chernobyl event. The images are both amazing and sobering.

You can view the images and read the accompanying article here.

Let’s hope things work out better for Japan.
